E3’s Dead. Long Live E4.

Friday 5 January 2007 @ 3:20 pm

e3_logo.jpgIDG's finally revealed a name for its giant consumer gaming show to replace the recently killed E3 show. The result: E For All, or E4, as it's undoubtedly going to be called. The name came from a consumer competition to name the show, and was entered by Dante Padre of California, who has a pretty bad ass name himself if we do say.

IDG is taking a more consumer-friendly stance with gaming tournaments, job fairs, family-oriented offerings, and a Video Games Live concert. Undoubtedly that means the general public will get to crowd in with the usual slobs who need to go to E3 E4 to cover all the news. Seems to us more like a convention that's halfway between E3's business dealings and PAX's fun-for-gamers approach.

PSToast, a PS2 Toaster Mod

Friday 5 January 2007 @ 12:35 pm

29042-PS2-Toaster.jpgWe have quite the infatuation with toasters of all shapes and sizes around these parts. So it makes me super giddy in the pantalones that someone has gutted a toaster and put a PS2 inside. It looks good, it works, but unfortunately it no longer makes toast, even though there are two available slots.

Nintendo Wii Sports Pack Wiimote Attachments

Friday 5 January 2007 @ 11:35 am

wsptennis.jpgThe Nintendo Wii's pack-in game Wii Sports is a pretty decent proof of concept, but waving around the Wiimote isn't exactly a realistic experience. However, by attaching these plastic, erm, attachments, you can authentically recreate the experience of swinging a baseball bat, golf club or tennis racket. Take a look for yourself at all of them on the other side.

So, in essence, you're paying $22 for pieces of plastic shaped like sports apparatuses. I can think of bigger wastes of money.

Xbox 360 v2 Found, Codenamed Zephyr

Friday 5 January 2007 @ 11:00 am

xbox_zephyr.jpgWell hot diggity damn. This is what appears to be a picture of an updated Xbox 360 that features an HDMI port and 120GB hard drive. The Microsoft insider who leaked this information said the Zephyr 360 should be available "soon." There isn't much else known, but once we find out, we will be all over it like a fat kid on cake.

Dealzmodo: Free Subscription to Games for Windows

Thursday 4 January 2007 @ 12:45 pm

iz3d.jpgAn updated, larger, and wider version of the iZ3D Three-Dimensional gaming monitor we reviewed in September is being launched at CES. Along with an improved look—they went black from silver—there are slightly less nerdy-looking glasses as well. The new specs look like goggles from that weird undersea part in Star Wars Episode I. We'll check these out at CES and let you know if there've been any significant improvements, and whether they still give me a headache.

Incidentally, we figured out it was because there's something wrong with my eyes or brain—we forget which—that caused me not to see 3D in the monitor.

Update: The deal runs until Jan. 8, even though the page says Jan. 2. They'll fix that soon.

Update Deux: Looks like the offer's ending early due to some technical difficulties. Darn.
